First 24 Hours

Your tattoo artist will cover your new tattoo with a bandage or plastic wrap. Keep this covering on for the time specified by your artist (usually 2-4 hours). This protects your fresh tattoo from bacteria and helps it start healing properly.

Cleaning Your Tattoo

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo
  • Use lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap
  • Gently wash the tattoo with your fingertips (no washcloths or sponges)
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel (no regular towels)
  • Let the tattoo air dry for 15-20 minutes

Moisturizing

After cleaning and drying, apply a thin layer of recommended ointment or lotion. Your artist will recommend specific products, but generally:

  • Use a fragrance-free, alcohol-free moisturizer
  • Apply 2-3 times daily
  • Don't over-apply - a thin layer is sufficient

What to Avoid

  • Swimming pools, hot tubs, and natural bodies of water
  • Direct sunlight and tanning beds
  • Picking or scratching at scabs
  • Tight clothing that might rub the tattoo
  • Excessive sweating and intense exercise

Healing Timeline

  • Days 1-3: Tattoo may be red, swollen, and tender
  • Days 4-7: Scabbing begins, avoid picking at scabs
  • Days 8-14: Scabs fall off naturally, skin may appear dull
  • Days 15-30: Tattoo fully heals, colors become vibrant

Long-term Care

Even after your tattoo is healed, proper care ensures it stays vibrant:

  • Always use sunscreen (SPF 30+) when exposed to sun
  • Keep your skin moisturized
  • Stay hydrated for healthy skin
  • Schedule touch-ups if needed

Remember: Every person's healing process is different. If you notice any signs of infection (excessive redness, swelling, or pus), contact your tattoo artist or a medical professional immediately.
