First 24 Hours
Your tattoo artist will cover your new tattoo with a bandage or plastic wrap. Keep this covering on for the time specified by your artist (usually 2-4 hours). This protects your fresh tattoo from bacteria and helps it start healing properly.
Cleaning Your Tattoo
- Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo
- Use lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap
- Gently wash the tattoo with your fingertips (no washcloths or sponges)
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel (no regular towels)
- Let the tattoo air dry for 15-20 minutes
Moisturizing
After cleaning and drying, apply a thin layer of recommended ointment or lotion. Your artist will recommend specific products, but generally:
- Use a fragrance-free, alcohol-free moisturizer
- Apply 2-3 times daily
- Don't over-apply - a thin layer is sufficient
What to Avoid
- Swimming pools, hot tubs, and natural bodies of water
- Direct sunlight and tanning beds
- Picking or scratching at scabs
- Tight clothing that might rub the tattoo
- Excessive sweating and intense exercise
Healing Timeline
- Days 1-3: Tattoo may be red, swollen, and tender
- Days 4-7: Scabbing begins, avoid picking at scabs
- Days 8-14: Scabs fall off naturally, skin may appear dull
- Days 15-30: Tattoo fully heals, colors become vibrant
Long-term Care
Even after your tattoo is healed, proper care ensures it stays vibrant:
- Always use sunscreen (SPF 30+) when exposed to sun
- Keep your skin moisturized
- Stay hydrated for healthy skin
- Schedule touch-ups if needed
Remember: Every person's healing process is different. If you notice any signs of infection (excessive redness, swelling, or pus), contact your tattoo artist or a medical professional immediately.
